Let’s All Party for Park(ing) Day Like it is 2030
“PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.”
Who was able to attend the Park(ing) It on Sherman event last year here in Coeur d’Alene?
What was your favorite part?
If you asked me these questions my answers would be Yes and I was able to enjoy it with my family. Last year we walked from home to the event, I know shocking that we didn’t ride our bikes, but we weren’t sure what to expect. Walking seemed like an easy choice without having to worry about bike parking. For this year not sure if whole family will go, Tom and I might go alone, on our bicycles of course. Regardless of how we get there; you should just get there! This year here is what’s happening…
The 1200 block of Sherman Avenue will host a FREE block party and parking spaces will be turned into public spaces as part of global Park(ing) Day. This second annual event is part of the visioning and master planning effort to revitalize East Sherman. Event highlights include: music, an outdoor movie, live mural painting, a pop-up town hall meeting, and other entertainment. The headliner will be reggae band Sol Seed Friday starting at 5pm ($5 admission for this concert only). Schedule of events soon to follow!
We are fortunate to live somewhere with plenty of “green” space surrounding us in any direction we travel. Other places aren’t as fortunate, so they use their day to emphasis parks and community elements in their designs. The point of this Park(ing) day is to draw attention to an area of our city that needs revitalization. It highlights ideas that can be incorporated into that revitalizaiton outside the usual bland slabs of concrete used over and over. When you create a sense of community with the design, art, and touches of nature; you create a space where people will want to spend time and money. Now what is more revitalizing than that?!
Let’s put on our party clothes, hop on our bicycles, and pedal on down to party like it is 2030 (or 1999 – whatever works).
