Adopt the Trails and Bikeways Plan for Coeur d’Alene: Dream Big Later

The new Trails and Bikeways Plan for Coeur d’Alene has been a semi-hot topic over the past few weeks. Or it could be because I have a member of the Coeur d’Alene Pedestrian and Bicycle Committee who lives here (husband Tom). Whatever the reason, it is important to ME. As a member of two non-profit boards that support walking and biking in Idaho and a bicyclist who has a goal of riding 900 miles this year having plenty of places to ride comfortably matters.

Here are a few of the Coeur d’Alene Press articles on the subject and a link to the plan itself if you want to do a bit of “light” reading:

Could We Do Better?

Do I think we can do better with the current plan? Yes, of course, we can. We all have visions of Amsterdam, Boulder, Colorado, or any other walking/biking city with the infrastructure we envy.  BUT…and it is a big but…

What I want everyone to keep in mind is that the Coeur d’Alene Trails and Bikeways plan has not been updated since 2010. I also want you to consider that to scrap, (or do a major revision), of this current plan, find money to help fund the man hours, hire a firm that does this type of planning, and finds the time to do it will potentially take another year or more, (in the grant funding world look closer to 2-3 years realistically).

That means…every road project, subdivision, major development, trail, or bikeway that is constructed until this plan is complete and approved by city council is only subject to the current Master Plan from 2010. What I, as a walking, biking, driving citizen of this city, would like to see is the plan as it is today, (with any changes that have been made since council tabled it for 60 days), get passed through city council. That way we at least have something that is better than what we had. Then work on a new fangled pie in the sky plan going forward.

Stop Bickering and Start Cooperating

Accomplishments are made in baby steps, not standing still. Let us keep moving forward, celebrate accomplishments that have already been made, and look with wide-eyed excitement at what could come next. Stomping their feet and throwing a tantrum never got my kids anything; except time out in what they referred to as the torture corner. Maybe people need to stop acting like children and be the adults we all know they can be…or…I have a nice corner in my house you are welcome to come sit in for a while.

PS Found this today it is quite interesting. Curious how many women will be involved in the planning process for the Master Plan. At the very least you should poll some! http://www.citylab.com/commute/2013/09/how-design-city-women/6739/
